RESUMO

Centrifugal atomization is a rapid solidification technique for producing metal powders. However, its wide application has been limited to the production of common metal powders and their corresponding alloys. Therefore, there is a lack of research on the production of novel materials such as metallic glasses using this technology. In this paper, aluminum-based glassy powders (Al86Ni8Y4.5La1.5) were produced by centrifugal atomization. The effects of disk speed, atomization gas, and particle size on the cooling rate and the final microstructure of the resulting powder were investigated. The powders were characterized using SEM and XRD, and the amorphous fractions of the atomized powder samples were quantified through DSC analysis. A theoretical model was developed to evaluate the thermal evolution of the atomized droplets and to calculate their cooling rate. The average cooling rate experienced by the centrifugally atomized powder was calculated to be approximately 7 × 105 Ks-1 for particle sizes of 32.5 µm atomized at 40,000 rpm in a helium atmosphere. Amorphous fractions from 60% to 70% were obtained in particles with sizes of up to 125 µm in the most favorable atomization conditions.

RESUMO

The lack of bioactivity of titanium (Ti) is one of the main drawbacks for its application in biomedical implants since it can considerable reduce its osseointegration capacities. One strategy to overcome this limitation is the coating of Ti with hydroxyapatite (HA), which presents similar chemical composition than bone. Nonetheless, most of the strategies currently used generate a non-stable coating and may produce the formation of amorphous phases when high temperatures are used. Herein, we proposed to generate a Ti-HA composite coating on Ti surface to improve the stability of the bioactive coating. The coating was produced by cold gas spraying, which uses relatively low temperatures, and compared to a Ti coating. The coating was thoroughly characterized in terms of morphology, roughness, porosity and phase composition. In addition, the coating was mechanically characterized using a tensile loading machine. Finally, biological response was evaluated after seeding SaOS-2 osteoblasts and measuring cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. The novel Ti-HA coating presented high porosity and high adhesion and bond strengths. No change in HA phases was observed after coating formation. Moreover, osteoblast-like cells adhered, proliferated and differentiated on Ti-HA coated surfaces suggesting that the novel coating might be a good candidate for biomedical applications.

RESUMO

The elevated cost of anodic materials used in the anodic oxidation for water treatment of effluents undermines the real application of these technologies. The study of novel alternative materials more affordable is required. In this work, we report the application of Sn-Cu-Sb alloys as cheap anodic material to decolorize azo dye Acid Blue 29 solutions. These anodes have been synthesized by cold gas spray technologies. Almost complete decolorization and COD abatement were attained after 300 and 600 min of electrochemical treatment, respectively. The influence of several variables such as supporting electrolyte, pH, current density and initial pollutant concentration has been investigated. Furthermore, the release and evolution of by-products was followed by HPLC to better understand the oxidative power of Sn-Cu-Sb electrodes.
